Spirit BuildersRead this Lowell sun article from 7/3/11 describing this great project to house homeless families within our church building and Pastor Peter's efforts to raise funds for it by cycling cross-country.
We wanted to expand our mission while finding new uses for our large administration building that had been under-utilized for years. The building was also a money-sink for energy costs. After much prayer, reflection, and discussion, the congregation and leaders decided to create five apartments to permanently house homeless families within the building. Christ Church United established Spirit Builders, Inc. as a non-profit agency to develop this housing project now named, "All Souls House". All Souls House: Permanent Housing for Homeless Families
Did you Know...?
- Instead of the stereotypical image of panhandlers on the streets, some 90% of Massachusetts' homeless are women and children. They may live in cars or in shelters, but they still have no permanent roof over their heads.
- Many people become homeless because they are unable to find jobs that pay a living wage, some lose their jobs or have their hours cut, while some are victims of fire and lose everything.
- 65 adults in families and 99 children were counted in the City of Lowell's homeless census. Christ Church United seeks to convert a portion of its current church building to permanently house up to 20 of these parents and children in All Souls House.
